A day at our main partner EY

Welcome! As main partner of Aureus, we believe that students should have the opportunity to prepare for life after finishing your university degree. This is where Aureus functions as a link between students and the business. We hope to see you at one of our EY events this year! Aureus’ partner EY is keen on helping you further your career and development. We hope that this blog helps you find out more about the EY work environment. If so Aureus makes available plenty of channels to get in touch with us.

About EY

EY is a globally-integrated professional services organization that provides advisory, assurance, tax and transaction services. As a company, we strongly believe that if the business world works better, the whole world works better. Our mission statement “Building a better working world” is all about the growing significance of sustainability when it comes to addressing our world, our people, and the environment. More specifically, through our statement, we aim to make a significant contribution to achieving a better working world for entrepreneurs and companies, as well as for our employees.

That is why we are committed to recruiting and developing talent. Through specific coaching by experienced co-workers. Personal and customized training. And by combining talents in the best performing teams. We want everyone who works or has worked at EY, no matter how long, to benefit greatly from this experience for the rest of their lives. In other words, sustainable development is key. This works both ways of course: only if we deploy the best people, will we be able to continue providing our exceptional services to our clients.

Many of our clients are large multinational companies. To serve them in the best possible way, we operate on the basis of an international structure, working with multicultural, multidisciplinary teams. Being part of a team, you have access to the support and expertise of your co-workers in more than 150 countries all over the world. Co-workers who will increasingly rely on you as your knowledge and experience increases. Thus, the whole world is our workplace, offering you a host of opportunities to build a global career.

A Testimonial – Laura’s Day at Work

Today I start early at the EY office in Amsterdam for a Breakfast Session. In turns, we can voluntarily sign up for a Breakfast Session to facilitate a presentation on a specific topic for the rest of the department. The topic may be about recent news updates or a specific accounting or auditing topic you think deserves a refresher. I signed up for the next session and will present on the new IFRS 9 standard on loan loss provisions. This provides me the opportunity to spend some time deepening my knowledge on an item I find interesting and I gain experience in presenting for a group. After all those years presenting in the classroom during my studies I am still a bit nervous sometimes and I have made it one of my personal goals to improve this the upcoming year.

After the session, I have to follow-up some comments I received from my Senior on my latest work for a client. We will have a team meeting after lunch so I need to finish those open items in order to be able to update the team on our final conclusions on the interim phase of the audit. This will take me at least 2 hours I think, this Senior is always quite picky on the details…

Thereafter I have a feedback session with my Senior on another client. At EY we have a 90-days cycle feedback system in place which enforces continuous feedback conversations with the people you worked with each cycle. I had to prepare goals for the full year, of which improving my presenting skills is an important one for the current year.

I will have lunch with my roommate, who is currently doing an internship at the Tax service line. She is a couple of floors below me, but we meet sometimes at the coffee corner on the ground floor to have a short break together. After lunch we have that team meeting, I still need to discuss with the other Staff on the team who of us is going to take notes.

This afternoon I need to respond to some emails and finish some other outstanding work. I will also sit down with the Social Committee that I am part of to discuss the scheduled activities with the department for the upcoming year. I think I will have dinner at the office too so that I can spend some time on my studies tonight. Another option is to go home and have a workout first before I finish my assignment.
