Make a real difference as a trainee
We expect you to take the initiative, to be eager to learn and to take a proactive, entrepreneurial approach, not only at the start but for the entire duration of your traineeship. We expect you to develop, and share, your own vision. Above all we expect you to deliver results. As a trainee at ING, you can – and should – make a real difference.
Before you can offer customers integral solutions, you must understand their core business. You’ll be thrown in at the deep end and be required to conduct lots of analysis. You need to be able to take a strategic approach, thrive on ambitious objectives and dare to assume responsibility in order to get things done. You’ll learn all this – and much more – as an ING trainee.
Outstanding career opportunities in an international environment
Wholesale Banking offers outstanding graduate career opportunities in a competitive and fast-moving international environment. At ING, we combine local knowledge with global expertise to provide custom-made financial services. We’re committed to innovating and taking the lead. Countless businesses, governments and financial institutions rely on our advice to operate efficiently, effectively and sustainably around the globe.
Your first project: the fundamentals of Wholesale Banking
Your talent manager will help you to decide on your first project, but ultimately it’s your decision. We expect you to show that you have enough initiative and entrepreneurial drive to deserve a place on such a project team, and that you can live up to expectations. Your first project will introduce you to the core business of Wholesale Banking. You gain insights into customers and product groups, and into the procedures involved in arranging customer loans. You might work as an Assistant Relationship Manager or as a Junior Associate Loan Syndications, for instance.
Besides your own project, you’ll work together with your fellow Wholesale Banking trainees on a group assignment. By working on this assignment you will gain broader knowledge of our Wholesale Bank. In addition to that, it challenges you to work on your personal development: managing stakeholders and time management are things you for example learn. The assignment is supervised by an external coach. At the end of the process, you give a presentation and advice to senior management.
Your second project: honing your analytical skills
It’s up to you to arrange your second project. Now it’s a matter of making use of your network and your own initiative. In this second project, you’ll once again form part of a team within Wholesale Banking. During this six-month period, you’ll work hard to hone your analytical skills. You might work as an analyst in a product unit such as Structured Finance, Corporate Finance or Financial Markets, for example.
Many of our trainees opt to do part of this second six-month project abroad. This means that you start off your rotation in The Netherlands and stay with the same department but complete that rotation in London, Frankfurt or Singapore, for example.
Your first job: specialising in your own area
In your first permanent job, which normally lasts two years, you enhance your knowledge and hone your skills. You can choose to specialise, perhaps as an Analyst within Capital Structuring & Advisory for instance.
Shape your own career
These roles are just a handful of examples to illustrate the possible direction your career could take within ING. You’re in charge of your own career path. We offer you the opportunities, the tools and the facilities, but it’s up to you to use them effectively to make your traineeship a success.
General and specialised training courses
Regardless of their chosen track within the ING International Talent Programme, all of our trainees attend the Global Learning Events where they learn about Core Banking (such as the role of a bank, the balance sheet, bank funding, IT processes, risk management, etc). Needless to say, this training also pays attention to softer skills such as Business Partnering/Stakeholder Management and presentation techniques.
In addition, the Wholesale Banking track includes specialised training courses such as CFA I + II, ING Value Chain and the Value Chain of WB Lending, Asset and Liability Management Basics, Documentation of Deals, Transaction Services, FM Products and Cross-selling and Compliance.
An express route to the top of Wholesale Banking
Are you looking for an express route to a management position or pivotal role within ING? Do you hold a master’s degree, preferably in economics, finance, business administration, investment or engineering? Does the challenging and dynamic world of Wholesale Banking appeal to you? Do you have vision, and are you able to share it convincingly with others? Do you have strong analytical skills and strategic reasoning, do you thrive on ambitious objectives and do you dare to assume responsibility? Are you prepared to invest in yourself and your career, and are you keen to learn a lot in a short space of time, both about yourself and your specialist area?
