The Batavierenrace is a relay race from Nijmegen to Enschede. About 8,500 students participate each year. This makes it the “Largest Relay Race in the World” in the Guinness Book of World Records.
The Batavierenrace starts on Friday night in Nijmegen and ends on Saturday afternoon in Enschede. The course of the Batavierenrace is 175 km long in total and is divided into 25 stages. The length of a stage varies between 3 and 10 km. For each stage it is indicated whether it should be run by a man or a woman. The runner runs from switch point to switch point and is accompanied by a teammate on a bicycle. At the transition point between the stages, the next rider is ready to take over the runner’s bib with a chip for time registration.
The night shift runs from Nijmegen to Ulft. The morning shift runs from Ulft to Barchem and the afternoon shift runs from Barchem to the Oude Markt in Enschede. From there, the last participants run to the UTrack on the campus of the University of Twente, where the race ends with the biggest student party of Europe! Sleeping places are arranged for both Friday and Saturday.
